UMLING LA PASS 19 024ft 5798m 164kms 22 August 2025

ROUNDTRIP 164kms    47°F - 80° F

Wanted to start early to avoid the crowds  at the top of the pass and it paid off. We left at 7:15 am and went up Photil La Pass which has to many switchbacks and at the top it is 18 400ft and then dropped back down onto the valley floor and that pass was 55 kilometers and took an hour and forty minutes. Then went up for 20 kilometers  to Chisumle where the start of Umling La Pass is. 
Then up another 20 kilometers  and your are at the top of the world's highest motorable pass, arriving at 10 am and we had the place to ourselves. 
Took us just under 3 hours and we only passed four vehicles in that time. Proceeded back down to Chisumle where we stopped for an omelette and watched the bike tours roll in, and they never stopped. Glad we left early cause it must be a zoo up there with all of them.

Took a different  route back, went up to Nerbole and then the dirt track down to Henle which provided  magnificent  views and a fun ride down to the hotel. Took  about an hour and forty minutes down, was perfect blue Montana sky day. Richard has been suffering a bit and was not well when we left this morning but made it and is feeling a bit better.

SHIMLA 11 AUGUST 130kms.

Was a long slow wet day to Shimla which is at about 2000 metres. It took us about six and a half hours to do 130 kms virtually  all in the rain, the road was mostly one lane up the mountains and twisty all the way, but not nice twisty. Finally  got to Shimla and got a room and went were soaked and my passport was soaked, had it in my ''waterproof " suite and now is ruined. Busy drying  out my gear now but the forecast doesn't look good for the next few days, so will decide in the morning where to go, if anywhere.     View from my window.

NEW DELHI 9 AUGUST 2025

Had a 6 hour flight to Addis then anothe 6 hours to New Delhi arriving at 8:30am. Got a taxi to hotel which is 28kms away to Park Plaza Hotel, near the bike rental place.  Had some lunch and then fell asleep for the rest of the day, could not wake up. Went out to eat and had a cold Kingfisher and got back to the hotel and slept through the night till Richard called me at 7:30am.  We had breakfast  and caught up from last time we were together in Baghdad, he had a heart attack when he got to London and now has 7 stints, but other than that is good to go. Got a tuk tub to go fetch our bikes 2kms away, and the driving is hectic here and anything goes. We have a 200cc Hero Pulse 2022, was meant to be a 2024 but wasn't. So we are all set for tomorrow's  departure north. A friend that hosted me in Israel is in town and am going to have breakfast with him in the morning at 7 am and then will try to get out of Delhi.     Vie...
